PSC Receives Award for Diversity Efforts
The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) was recognized last week for promoting utility involvement in Florida’s supplier diversity program and for its ongoing commitment to Florida’s small businesses.
The Office of Supplier Diversity (OSD) Director’s Award was given for an April 2006 Commission workshop focusing on the relationship between Florida’s investor-owned utilities and the state’s small businesses. The Commission identified ways in which investor-owned utilities contribute to economic development in the state as well as their efforts to purchase services from small business owners. The award was presented at the OSD Matchmaker Conference and Trade Fair held in Orlando, November 15-17.
“Economic development should be encouraged wherever possible,” Commissioner Isilio Arriaga said. “Our efforts to bring the small businesses and utilities together help balance social justice issues with those that make good business sense.”
OSD hosts the annual Matchmaker Conference and Trade Fair to help minority vendors connect with state purchasing offices. The conference is recognized as Florida’s signature event for minority and women business entrepreneurs, providing a forum for minority businesses, state purchasing officers, and private industry to share ideas and develop partnerships. More than 700 people participated in this year’s event featuring 130 exhibitors and 200 companies seeking to purchase goods and services from eligible, certified vendors.
