Florida’s Public Service Commission and Department of Management Services are partnering to help small and minority business owners throughout Florida “match up” with government agencies and companies needing their services at the 2008 Big Bend MatchMaker workshop, May 13, at the Leon County Civic Center in Tallahassee.
This regional MatchMaker workshop will contribute to Florida’s economic development and business growth by helping Florida companies find minority vendors who want to compete for their procurement contracts. When Florida’s small businesses succeed, economic security and prosperity flourish in local communities across the state.
Regional MatchMaker workshops statewide are recognized as signature events for Florida’s minority/women business entrepreneurs. The 2008 Big Bend MatchMaker is one of many regional workshops held throughout the state during the year. The culmination of the statewide regional workshops is the larger Annual MatchMaker Conference and Tradeshow, which will be held in November 2008 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.
This year’s regional Big Bend MatchMaker is unique because it will connect Florida’s major utility companies, as well as government agencies, with minority businesses from across the state. It offers attendees opportunities to enhance their business skills, network and build lasting business partnerships with leading utility companies and state and local government procurement officials.
Coinciding with Florida’s Small Business Owners Week, May 12-16, this MatchMaker workshop promises to be an exciting, educational, and purposeful event. The day-long agenda includes an informational program on “Doing Business with the State of Florida: Responding to Bids and Navigating the Purchasing Process” and a panel discussion on the “Economic Opportunities for Women and Minority Business Enterprises in the Utilities and Telecommunications Industries.” Following a luncheon, attendees will have the opportunity to sign-up for one-on-one 15-minute sessions with the utility companies of their choice.
Corporate partners for the 2008 Big Bend MatchMaker and other participating companies will be seeking to purchase goods and services from eligible, certified minority vendors. On-site state certification for small and minority vendors will be available. Contract opportunities may include HVAC, computer, environmental, and civil and transportation services, underground line construction or temporary labor, to name a few.
