Furthering renewable energy development in the state, Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) today approved Progress Energy Florida’s (PEF) purchase of power from a proposed U.S. EcoGen Polk, LLC (EcoGen) biomass electric generating facility.
“This new biomass facility will help diversify PEF’s generating fuel mix and shield customers from fluctuations in fossil fuel costs,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham.
EcoGen plans to sell 60 MW of capacity and associated energy to PEF for approximately 29 years beginning January 1, 2014. The facility is expected to supply the energy needs of approximately 10,000 Florida homes.
With facility construction planned in Polk County, EcoGen estimates that 300 jobs will be created during construction and 35 jobs are expected to be needed in operations.
The company plans initially to use waste wood for fuel and in the future may grow a crop for fueling the biomass facility.
