The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) today helped Florida City Gas (FCG) residential and commercial customers better prepare for power outages by approving a rate for generator-only use. Effective immediately, the rate applies to new FCG customers whose only gas appliance is a generator.
“Life in Florida includes the possibility of severe weather that can disrupt communities, businesses, and everyday lives, so we always encourage storm preparedness, especially during hurricane season,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé. “This natural-gas fired generator-only FCG service offers customers on-demand, dependable energy during power outages.
FCG’s new residential generator-only customers will be charged $16.81 per month for usage up to 14 therms, covering the minimal usage for periodic testing recommended by generator manufacturers. New FCG commercial generator-only customers will be charged $24 per month for usage up to 26 therms. FCG currently has 105 residential and 36 commercial generator-only customers.
Customers will not incur additional charges unless their generators–which do not run except during electric outages--operate for a sustained period of time. No other gas appliances are required for FCG’s generator-only service, and the new rate will not affect other FCG ratepayers. All existing generator-only customers will remain on the current rate schedule at this time.
The PSC recently approved a similar generator-only rate for Florida Public Utilities Company and Peoples Gas System.
